On 9 November, Roche Bobois’ impressive Budapest showroom was the venue for a special one-night event, a celebration of design and fashion. Pieces from Kata Szegedi’s SS24 collection were given a new interpretation in the showroom of the iconic French brand. They interacted with the characterful furniture, sometimes dramatically, sometimes casually, sometimes humorously. While there are many similarities in the spirit of the two brands, this encounter has given both new nuances.

Kata Szegedi spoke about the relationship between fashion and design, the installations and the round table discussion at the event.

At the fashion and design evening at Roche Bobois, Kata Szegedi’s clothes appeared in the form of an object and sculpture-like installation, creating an exciting synergy with the interior and furniture. When did you start pushing the boundaries of genre as a fashion designer?
From the very beginning. My design partner, Dani Benus , and I both went to the College of Fine and Applied Arts, where all kinds of art were present. We studied with painters, sculptors and ceramists, among others. So for me it was never a question of being more open to the boundaries of genre. I think that fashion and design cannot exist without each other. Fashion is design, even if it is often treated separately.

During the roundtable discussion, you mentioned that as a designer, you share a similar vision of the brand ethos of Kata Szegedi and Roche Bobois. Can you highlight a few specifics? In what ways do you identify with Roche Bobois?
Both are characterised by a bold use of form and materials. For example, shiny metallic finishes and dynamic lines are common, which is why they work so well together. Both Roche Bobois and Kata Szegedi represent a forward-thinking, modern approach. I think that while it appeals to a lot of everyone, it’s not for everyone. You need a curious and open minded approach to these objects and clothes.

Do you have a favourite piece of Roche Bobois furniture?
The translucent AVA chair is one of my all-time favourites, and we used it several times when we were installing our clothes.

How did you design the installations?
An important goal for me was to not take the focus completely away from the furniture, we were aiming for roughly 50-50 balance. And we selected our clothes to work best with the interior and the objects. We didn’t want to rearrange the showroom, just to see how these clothes lived in the space. Most of the installations were planned in advance, but there were intuitive connections that developed between clothes and furniture on the spot.

Which installations are most personal to you, where you think the intertwining of fashion and design is most realised?
The part of the showroom where the roundtable discussion took place I think really conveyed what we were trying to get out of it all. Our denim jacket and skirt laid out on the BUBBLE sofa, the staples of our Spring 2024 Summer collection, and the hanging Roads jeans alongside the organic line-work lamps. But I also really loved the match between our mirror-effect trousers and the aforementioned translucent AVA chairs.

Nekem ők a mindennapi életem fontos részei, nemcsak szakmai szempontból de barátokként is.

Gergővel többször dolgoztunk már együtt, és az egyik közös munkánk nagyon jó reflektál ezekre a mostani installációkra. Három éve, a Covid alatt nem modelleken, hanem enteriőrökben, bútorokon fotóztuk be az akkori kollekciót. A ruháinkat mi Object of Desire-ként, inkább szobrokként, objektekként defináljuk, ezért is érdekes szerintem, amikor nem embereken mutatjuk be őket. Ez a fotózás a mostani a installációk előképe volt.

Nemes Marci munkássága közben egy állandó inspiráció számunkra Benus Danival, nagyon egyfelé mutat az ízlésünk. A műhelyünkbe is vannak tőle alkotások, ezekre nagy szeretettel tekintek, gyermeki lelkesedéssel nézem őket nap mint nap. Mindig mást adnak, ha éppen alkotunk, ha éppen vendéget fogadunk, szomorúak vagy vidámak vagyunk. Sokáig gondolkodtam azon, hogy hazavigyem-e őket, de aztán mindig arra jutok, hogy úgyis annyi időt töltünk Danival a műhelyben, és annyira sokat adnak a hangulatunkhoz és a tervezési folyamatainkhoz, hogy végül mindig maradnak.

Azért választottam Marcit és Gergőt a beszélgetéshez, mert azt gondoltam, hogy olyan izgalmas dolgokat fognak mondani, ami mindenki számára inspiráló lesz. Nem is csalódtam. Szívesen beszélgettem volna még hosszabban a srácokkal, és örülök, hogy a közönség is kíváncsian és nyitottan hallgatta őket. Azt gondolom több hasonló jellegű eseményre lenne szükség Magyarországon, ahol a divat fogalmát tágabban értelmezzük.
